EMDR Therapy for Teens in San Francisco
EMDR Therapy
EMDR is a brain-therapy that helps people effectively move past difficult memories, once and for all.
Let’s face it, we all deal with things from our past that seem to continue to haunt us to varying degrees.
It was once thought that trauma, or PTSD, only happened to soldiers who had been to war and back…but now, we know that’s not true. Now, we know that there are “big T” traumas like experiencing violence, but also there are “little T” traumas like a sudden and painful breakup, being bullied, or the loss of a loved one. In reality, trauma is anything that disrupts our sense of homeostasis and wellbeing.
When left untreated, trauma has the potential to be very pervasive, meaning it can creep into various parts of our life if left unchecked. Some signs and symptoms of untreated trauma include:
-Constantly feeling “on edge”
-Panic attacks
-Social anxiety and nervousness
-Increase or decrease in appetite
-Increase or decrease in sleep
-Alcohol and drug use
-Depression
-Feeling detached
-Reliving the traumatic memories involuntarily (e.g., “flashbacks”)
The good news is that trauma and PTSD are entirely treatable with EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
EMDR is proven by research to dramatically decrease symptoms of trauma and PTSD, sometimes in as little as one session.
Simply thinking about traumatic or difficult memories doesn’t help, and in fact can make things much worse. EMDR targets difficult memories in a controlled, therapeutic way. EMDR helps people successfully move past difficult memories and begin to be able to talk about the memories without having intense emotional reactions or triggers.
You can break free from the past. EMDR works.
